Curious -- did you make your reservation online w/ the lake powell houeboat rental page (debra joaquim)? if so, did that work out ok? also, we will be towing a motorboat behind the houseboat to give us more flexibility in exploring. how did the houseboat handle? do you think towing this extra boat will make it more difficult? We're going to be in a 50-ft boat. 7 of us (2 adults, 5 kids). Any tips? Howdy, Was surfing the net for info on houseboating in Lake Powell, I've been thinking about a trip there late summer/early fall and your page has thus far provided the most pertinent info for a potential first-timer. Again many thanks for making the info available, kudos! The publications you recommended have already been ordered(from Julia). We are going with a group of 3 families (6 adults and 4 kids) in August. At least we have the little monsters outnumbered, though I suspect the trip will include just 10 kids... Needless to say, we rented the largest boat Wahweap offers. We'll be taking our skiboat, and our group will rent a second 14' boat for exploring the narrow canyons. Thought you'd like to know your efforts and information came in handy. Enjoyed your account on L. Powell this spring...having returned from Powell myself, just last night, actually about 2:00 a.m. just had to comment. Your comments were just like we were just there ourselves...(we were), especially comments about anchoring and stormy nights, etc. We had for the most part excellent weather except for one day of very high winds in the 40 to 50 mph area in gusts. We boated up north (actually east I guess) up river from Bullfrog marina. Nice secluded canyons, which I would recommend over the western part of the Lake which seems more crowded. As far as anchoring, we prefer and area that has really large rocks on either side of a sandy beach (admit--hard to find sometimes) and then anchoring behind those rocks as they will hold even in very hard winds. Sand seems to work o.k. but have to have the anchors deep to keep from pulling or slipping. Really do agree about the ARAMARK folks, a little untrained, nice, but unknowledgeable as well. Motor trouble also plagued us at times, and gas grill very hard to light in wind, but most of all we had a lot of fun and are looking forward to doing it all again next year if all works out. We used a 50 foot standard boat and had 4 couples aboard--helps spread out the cost and cooking, dishwashing and anchoring responsibilities. Any questions for us here at this end? Take care, keep writing. We were there last summer for only 5 days, can't wait to go back! I too am working on a personal page about lake Powell. As you seem to have noticed there aren't many pages out there that are complete and comprehensive. Mine will include weather charts/graphs, rental info, fishing info etc. And of course reference to Julia. She took care of our reservation too. I have 2 years of links that I have found and will include them as well. Naturally I'll have images. I will get come slides from our trip in 1970 showing what Rainbow Canyon was like 28 years ago when we had to walk over 1 mile from the dock to the bridge! One map you might want to get for your next trip is Lake Powell South & Lake Powell North from the Fish n Map Co. (http://www.fishnmap.com/sampmap.html) It is superior to any of the other maps I have. 1 1/4":1 mile, contour lines above & BELOW high water line, shows main channel and obstructions etc. I found them in Marine shops, tackle shops and on line: http://www.fishnmap.com/sampmap.html Check it out! Dave Tate's Navigating does not show enough detail (5/8":1 mile). Stan Jones' is great for planning. I Have both the Boater's Guide to Lake Powell and An explorers'd Guide to Lake Powell Country, both are great reference material. Enjoy! I enjoyed your details of you and Augie's Lake Powell adventure. My family and I went there in 95 and had a wonderful time. We too stayed in Dungeon Canyon. Too bad the time and weather did not permit you to locate the Moki Steps about a quarter mile walking distance from where you were. They are pretty awe inspiring being they are several hundreds of years old. I am planning our next houseboating trip for August. This time for an entire week. I have found that if you go in August/September, you have next to nil chance of weather ruining (or causing hardship to) your vacation. Usually that time of year has the water at 80 degrees and the air temp around 95 (day) and 72 (night).... WONDERFUL adventure weather. Anyhow, thanks for the story and I hope you and your son make it back to majestic Lake Powell soon... Mark
